Responsive Classroom

Please view our Responsive Classroom handout from our Family Handbook.

The Responsive Classroom philosophy is the cornerstone of our academic community. It promotes the development of a social curriculum that believes that the school’s greatest contribution to the future will be the way it helps to weave and strengthen the social fabric of the community it serves. How children are treated and how they learn to treat others is of utmost importance at Newfield School. As the social skills of cooperation, assertion, responsibility, empathy and self-control increase, the behavior problems decrease, and a noticeable family-like climate permeates the school. http://www.responsiveclassroom.org

Why does Newfield Elementary School use the Responsive Classroom teaching method?

"The Responsive Classroom approach to teaching emphasizes academic, social, and emotional growth in a strong school community. ...How children learn is as important as what they learn, and academic success is inextricably tied to building social-emotional competencies. [...] Independent research has found that the Responsive Classroom approach is associated with higher academic achievement in math and reading, improved school climate, and higher-quality instruction. It has been backed by the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) as one of the most 'well-designed evidence-based social and emotional learning programs.'
